About CQ Press Journalism

Being an upstart has advantages. Our publishing company is almost 50 years old, but we are a relatively new player to journalism – entering the field at a time when the industry and curricula are undergoing historic change. But where there is disruption, there is always opportunity. Today’s entrepreneurial journalist certainly knows this to be true. As do we, as we publish our books and online learning modules geared to ever evolving curricula and rapid technological change.

We strive to produce resources that are multiplatform in approach and embrace multimedia—resources intended to be practical, focused, and helpful in charting the future of the industry. We develop products to be as useful to students in journalism programs as well as to working, professional journalists.

Are we living up to these goals? Do our products fit your teaching needs? Do they fit your writing and reporting needs? Let us know. We’re eager for your feedback, new ideas, and proposals.

About CQ Press

CQ Press, a division of SAGE, is the leading publisher of books, directories, periodicals, and electronic products on American government and politics, with expanding lists in international affairs, history and journalism. CQ Press consistently ranks among the top commercial presses in terms of quality, as evidenced by the numerous awards its products have won over the years.

CQ Press owes its existence to Nelson Poynter, former publisher of the St. Petersburg Times, and his wife Henrietta, with whom he founded Congressional Quarterly in 1945. Poynter established CQ with the mission of promoting democracy through education, and in 1975 founded the Modern Media Institute, renamed The Poynter Institute for Media Studies after his death. The Poynter Institute ( is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training journalists and media leaders. Poynter wrote that publishing is a “sacred trust and a great privilege;” his ideals of objectivity, depth of coverage, high editorial standards, and independent ownership are carried forward today by CQ Press.

In 2008, CQ Press was acquired by SAGE, a leading international publisher of journals, books, and electronic media for academic, educational, and professional markets. Since 1965, SAGE has helped inform and educate a global community of scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students spanning a wide range of subject areas, including business, humanities, social sciences, and science, technology and medicine. A privately owned corporation, SAGE has offices in Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, and Singapore, in addition to the Washington DC office of CQ Press.
